Tailgate Stories: The Detroit Lions Blog Post #3 Draft Talk

With draft day looming we should talk about some draft day topics that may concern our Detroit Lions.

According to Marc Sessler of NFL.com is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles are now asking of a 5th or 6th round pick for Asante Samuel.

I think if I were Martin Mayhew and the Detroit Lions I might be thinking of offering a 6th round pick.

I mean it can’t hurt and we obviously need help in the secondary. I mean there is always a chance that whoever the Lions draft in the 6th round will not even make the team and on the other hand Samuel could also be a total bust. I think what I am trying to say is that it is worth a shot and Lions really should look into it.

This week there has been quite a few draft prospects visiting Detroit Lions HQ. Here is the list from this week.

Monday 4/16/2012

Derrick Colman, RB, UCLA

Isaiah Frey, CB, Nevada

Tuesday 04/17/2012

Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

Joe Kaddu, DE, Oregon

Conroy Black, CB, Utah

Wednesday 04/18/2012

Bryce Brown, RB, Kansas State

Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall

A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois

Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Rishard Matthews, WR, Nevada

Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State

Most of these visits are with prospects for the 2nd and 3rd day in the draft. Andre Branch might be a possible 2nd rounder and could be a great pick up if he is there.

GM Martin Mayhew had his pre draft press conference on Thursday. Did not really give much up information (We all know that he wouln’t. That would not be smart. That would be Millen). There was one comment that I thought really described how Mayhew and his team go into the draft. It really describes how they draft and how they have drafted. Funny I picked this out of everything. It really made me think what they are going to do this year. I mean it could be anybody (Please be a CB).

It was his last statement to this on this question “What is difference in the approach to the draft this year from last year based on the timing of free agency?” Mayhew “We’re going to go into it with an open mind. We’re going to take the best players and then if we have to fill in gaps later, we’ll do that during the rest of the offseason.”

Why that stuck out to me I do not know, but it did. I think it says a lot.

The live chat with President Tom Lewand and other season ticket holders was fun on Thursday. Nothing special about it but it is always a good time when the organization opens up to us. And not to toot my own horn, but it was question about Sammie Hill that broke the news about him signing his tender. One note on what Tom Lewand said during the chat was that there will be a lot more stuff going on the stadium during game days. I am looking forward to that.

The draft is 6 days away and I am finally getting my mock draft finished up. I will post it once I am finished. I am feeling pretty about my mock draft this year.
