Since Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos, the single biggest question has been his neck. Is he healthy? How will he respond when he gets hit for the first time? There have been countless articles, opinions and thoughts on number 18’s neck but there’s one guy that I know and trust who says none of these people have any idea what they are talking about.
A little over 3 years ago, I had a similar surgery to the one that Manning had and recently went in for a checkup. For those of you who know me, everything is fine. For the rest of you who do not really care about my neck, I have some more interesting news for you. I asked my Doctor (we will call him Dr. White) if I could ask him a question and he said, “Depends on the question.” Dr. White has a warped sense of humor; he once told me that if my surgery did not work that he would just take me outside and shoot me.
Like I said, a warped sense of humor.
I asked him about Manning, or at least I started to. Before I could get the full question out, Dr. White went into a rant as only he can. All I did was say, Peyton Manning and he started. The first thing he said was, “none of these people have any idea what they are talking about.” He went onto say, “His (Manning’s) neck will be fine, it will probably be stronger than it was before.” I asked, so there’s no greater risk of injury? Dr. White said, “Of course he (Manning) could get hurt on any play but this idea that his neck is going to be a problem is absurd.” Dr White then went back to his unique sense of humor and said, “If you (meaning me) had any talent whatsoever, I’d let you play.” Thanks Doc!
There has been a lot written and said about Manning and his neck, and there will continue to be but I’ll take Dr. White’s opinion over the local sports writers. I mean he can’t be all that bad, he fixed me didn’t he?
