Breaking down the AP Top 25

The Associated Press announced their Preseason Top 25 recently. The best part about the poll is the criticism that everyone seems to have. So without further adieu…

Ranked too Low:

#22 Kansas State: For a team with a lot of returning talent, I think the Wildcats got snubbed a bit. They return QB Collin Klein and LB Arthur Brown who are both possible NFL talents. This team could be the 3rd best team in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma and WVU, so #22 is low for this team.

#18 Ohio State: I wrote an article a few weeks back about Braxton Miller’s coming out party. Well, obviously I think they are ranked a few spots lower than what they should be. Urban Meyer will turn this team around and get it back to the National Title Spotlight. The defense will be much improved.

#6 Georgia: Aaron Murray is a stud at QB. Yes, I know they lost Isaiah Crowell, but the Bulldogs do have adequate replacements. The defense has loads of NFL talent and it would be a real shocker if they do not win the SEC East.

Ranked too High:

#15 Texas: I really don’t see how people have this much faith in Texas. In years past they always have tons of talent, but I don’t believe they will be or should be the #15 ranked team in the country. Last year they were ranked, and we all know how they finished.

#11 WVU: Yes, I know I’m a WVU alum, but #11 for a team entering a new conference and huge question marks on defense should not be ranked #11. The offense will score points and that is without question, but can the defense stop anyone? I think #11 is a bit high for the Mountaineers, but they shouldn’t be ranked lower than #15.

#25 Louisville: I know #25 is a tossup spot because there are about 4 or 5 teams fighting for that last spot, but the best team in the Big Least, sorry Big East, should not be ranked. Louisville is one of those teams that should win the conference, but in terms of making a true impact on the nation the Cardinals are not even close. Just remember the year UCONN played Oklahoma…same situation.

Ranked Just Right:

The top 3:  USC should be #1 because of the talent they have returning and well everything points to a magical season in LA. LSU and Alabama lost some serious talent, but are the next best two teams. It all makes sense to me.

#24 Boise St.: Boise St. has been consistently ranked in the top 25 for quite a few years now. The defense will need to reload and the offense needs to have some people step up, but for a team that always seems to make a statement the Broncos deserve a top 25 spot.

#7 Florida State: The Seminoles are the clear favorites to win the ACC, which isn’t a powerhouse conference like the SEC. However, the best team in the ACC is deserving of a top 10 ranking. The Seminoles have a lot of young talent mixed some veterans, so #7 makes sense to me.

Obviously, these are just my opinions. To the next person they might look and disagree with all my thoughts, but have their own complaints. This is how the Top 25 polls work. Yes, to rank teams before they even play a game is silly, but for discussion purposes it can’t get any better. So thank you AP Top 25 poll for giving the country something to debate 2 weeks before the season starts.
