The Heisman Front Runner

WikipediaFor those who are completely oblivious to the Heisman Trophy Race, there is a new Front Runner. His name is Geno Smith and he plays Quarterback for the West Virginia University Mountaineers. Geno stated his claim as the clear cut favorite to take the trophy after the first month of the season by throwing for 656 yds on 45/51 passing. This statistic though says it all. Geno threw for eight, yes eight, touchdowns. In case that didn’t register with some of the people reading this THE MAN THREW MORE TOUCHDOWNS THAN INCOMPLETIONS. On the season, Geno is completing an astonishing 83.4% of his passes.

People are comparing his first month to what RGIII did last season, but truth be told Geno is having a much better season.

Through the first four games of the year, Geno has totaled 1,728 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Geno is throwing the football with amazing accuracy and precision that is allowing the Mountaineers to win shoot outs. That was more evident on Saturday as it took 70, yes 70, points to beat Baylor. Geno seems to have complete control of Dana Holgorsen’s air raid offense.

With a showdown in Austin next week, Geno Smith will be counted on once again to have another monumental game against a tough Longhorn defense. If the Mountaineers keep winning or Geno keeps putting up unheralded numbers then there is no doubt that he will be hoisting the trophy in New York in December. As the competition for the Heisman Trophy seemed to fade (except for De’Anthony Thomas) in the month of September, Geno Smith stepped up and ended the month with a statement game. The question going forward will be can he maintain the production that has allowed him to catapult up the Heisman Trophy list?
